Caring For The Historic Trees Of San Carlos, CA

Tree service professionals of San Carlos, California share a bit about the oldest trees in the area and what the city does to protect them.

The Bay Area Is Home to Some of the World’s Oldest Trees

In California, when we say old trees we mean really old trees. This area holds both ancient redwood forests and bristlecone pine forests with trees that have lived for centuries. This area of the world takes tree care very seriously and people strive to preserve these amazing natural wonders when they can. This article will discuss some of the most famous trees in this area as well as what the city of San Carlos is doing to help save landmark trees.

Nearby Notables: Ancients Among the Ancients

As previously stated, there are forests-worth of old trees in this state, but there are a few that stand above the rest(in some cases quite literally). Some of the most well known and visited trees near the city are known as the Old Survivor and Methuselah.

  • The Methuselah Tree: Named for the oldest man in the Bible, this ancient coast redwood has stood for 2,000+ years in the Bay Area. It is a short drive to Woodside, CA, a city south of San Carlos. The tree has a diameter of 14 feet and exceeds 30 feet in circumference.
  • Old Survivor: This redwood is between four and five hundred years old and stands tall above the rest of the surrounding forest in Oakland, CA. For some unknown reason it was not logged with its brothers and therefore can be seen from far below its spot near the York Trail.
  • Big Basin Redwoods State Park: It is well worth noting that Big Basin is the oldest state park in California and has beautiful old trees, hiking trails, and waterfalls.

City Regulations

The city of San Carlos has called for the protection of several species of trees if they are above a certain circumference. Most of the species mentioned are protected if they are 30 inches around or more. Each species has its own rule. The tree species in question are listed below.

  • Buckeye
  • Madrone
  • Coast Live Oak
  • Valley Oak
  • Blue Oak
  • Interior Live Oak
  • Redwood
  • California Bay Laurel

The redwood must be a circumference of 72 inches to be protected.

What A Certified Arborist Can Do For Your Trees

While the trees noted in this article are on public property, there are many old trees that are on private property as well. Caring for an older tree can be a prickly job. Tree trimming, tree pruning, and other such tasks can be difficult for homeowners who may not have the proper equipment to perform these tree health care tasks. A reputable tree service company will have the equipment and the people trained to do the job right without causing harm to the tree. If the tree’s health is failing, then they can help you make the decision about whether or not it is time for tree removal.
