Wood-Boring Insects and Bay Area Trees: What Homeowners Should Know

Spring is a critical time for tree health—and across the Bay Area, homeowners should be on the lookout for wood-boring insects (WBI), including emerging invasive species like Invasive Shot Hole Borers (ISHB) and the Mediterranean Oak Borer (MOB). These pests may be small, but their impact on trees can be severe, affecting structural stability, accelerating decline, and in some cases, killing trees prematurely.


What Are Wood-Boring Insects and Ambrosia Beetles?

Wood-boring insects are a group of pests that tunnel into trees, often targeting stressed or weakened hosts. Ambrosia beetles, a subgroup of WBIs, have a unique relationship with fungi: they carry fungal spores in specialized structures called mycangia and introduce these fungi into the wood. These fungi grow in “gardens” inside the tree, providing food for beetle larvae. Once introduced, this fungus spreads beyond the beetle galleries and disrupts the tree’s vascular system, blocking water transport and leading to branch dieback, canopy thinning, and eventual mortality.

The Mediterranean Oak Borer, recently detected in Santa Clara, Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties, is an invasive ambrosia beetle native to Europe. It attacks Valley Oaks and can rapidly spread, especially in trees already stressed by drought or other pests. The beetles often start in the canopy and gradually move down to the lower trunk, introducing fungi along the way, which can accelerate decline and increase the risk of limb drop, trunk breakage, and premature tree death.

Invasive Shot Hole Borers (ISHB) are among the most destructive wood-boring insects currently impacting California’s urban and natural forests. This group includes two closely related species of ambrosia beetles that attack a wide range of trees—including many common Bay Area species such as sycamore, box elder, willow, and coast live oak.

Because these beetles impact both the vascular system and structural wood, decline can progress quickly—and trees may become hazardous before symptoms are fully apparent throughout the canopy. In heavily infested trees, removal is often necessary to limit spread and reduce risk.


Signs to Look For

Homeowners should watch for these indicators of wood-boring activity:

  • Exfoliating or peeling bark: Wood under the bark may appear dry, with galleries, entry holes, or frass visible.
  • Beetle frass: Sawdust-like material accumulating around the base of the tree, in bark crevices, or outside entry holes. Size and color of frass can hint at the depth of boring and beetle species.
  • Entry holes: Small, round holes in the bark—often uniform in size for ambrosia beetles like ISHB.
  • Wet staining or sap flow: Dark staining, gumming, or “weeping” at points of attack, particularly common with ISHB.
  • Canopy symptoms: Wilting, defoliation, broken branches, or thinning in the upper crown.
  • Lower trunk damage: As infestations progress, beetles may colonize the main trunk, weakening structural stability.

Early detection is essential for protecting tree health and preventing catastrophic failure.


Treatment Options

Preventive care and early intervention are critical. Treatment options include:

Cultural and preventative care

  • Planting species suited to the site and soil conditions
  • Protecting roots and trunks from injury
  • Maintaining proper irrigation and fertilization to reduce tree stress

Chemical and targeted treatments

  • Basal bark sprays: Applied to the lower trunk to control actively boring insects
  • Trunk injections: Deliver systemic insecticides directly into the vascular system for deeper protection
  • Fertilization: Supporting tree vigor helps trees resist or recover from WBI activity

Timing is important—spring is when many WBIs become more active, making it the ideal window for inspections and preventive treatments.
